Bowery had been a late call up to the Oxford starting XI, after Kemar Roofe, the League Two player of the season was injured in the warm up!
However, County hit back less than a minute later. A long throw on the right was only half cleared by the Visitors and then a great turn by Elito was followed by a rasping shot into the far corner which the keeper got nowhere near to!
Suddenly it was the travelling support of over 1000 Oxford fans who had gone quiet, and the County fans were singing loud and proud!
The rest of the first-half was a fairly even affair, with a couple of half chances to each side, but also what looked like a half decent penalty shout for Oxford. After a bit of a scramble in the six yard box, as the County centre back smashed the ball clear he seemed to catch the shin of Oxford striker Danny Hylton, who went down screaming in pain! However, the claims were waved away by the referee and play comtinued.
The teams went into the interval at 1-1, but not long into the 2nd half, it was Newport's turn for a penalty claim. As John-Lewis bared down on goal chasing a good through ball from Byrne, the Oxford keeper came out to the corner of the box, and collided with the Exiles striker, seemingly nowhere near the ball! The county players and crowd alike cried out for a penalty, but nothing was given, and from where I was sat which was not very far away at all behind the Oxford goal, it looked as if it would have been a harsh penalty to award for sure.
A few other half chances came and went, but the one notable big chance came when a thunderous shot from County's Elito which crashed against the post, deflected off the keeper's back and agonisingly rolled wide of the post to the despair of the home faithful!
At the end of an eventful and thoroughly entertaining 90 minutes, the game ended 1-1, which was more beneficial to. Newport than Oxford as it was a point closer to safety for County, but considered 2 points dropped for Oxford, who dropped to third in the table behind Accrington Stanley.
